A completely illuminating biopic on John Cranko, born in South Africa, hence the non German name, who lands in Stuttgart in 1960 after a 'problem' in the UK regarding his sexuality. He is offered not only the lead choreographers role, which he thinks is temporary, but that of Artistic Director of the company.
The Ballet Company in Stuttgart, like Germany itself post-war, is seeking to revitalse its image and Cranko is just the person for the job. Driven, with a rare talent for what the New York Times describes as being able to "invent a new world of dance" he demands excellence and loyalty from his dancers but also plays favourites and this causes friction.
