OFFICIAL SELECTION - 2023 CANNES INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL (Premiere)

Vincent Macaigne and Cecile de France  star in BONNARD, PIERRE & MARTHE, the beautiful and transporting new historical drama from multi award-winning director Martin Provost (Séraphine, The Midwife) about the turbulent love story between the famous post-Impressionist painter and his lesser-known - but highly influential - wife.

It's 1893 and  when aspiring French painter Pierre Bonnard (Macaigne), a protégé of Claude Monet , a character who also  features in the film, meets Marthe de Méligny (de France), he has no idea that this self-proclaimed aristocrat will become the cornerstone of his life and work. From this moment she appears in over a third of his work.

She's more than just a muse however ; together over five decades, the couple will explore creative fulfillment, love and jealousies that challenge the standards of the time, as the film interrogates the great mystery around their relationship.

Provost’s vision for this material is clear and concise; what may appear as a traditional account of its subjects moves beyond conventions and we see Marthe as a much stronger character for the time than the docile artist's wife.  Cecile De France conveys all the emotions and the film is a hugely rewarding study of character, art and the time.

"Carried by its two brilliant lead actors, the film is a vigorous, joyful and refreshing portrait of an atypical couple: an artist and his muse who holds the keys to their bohemian existence." Cineuropa

"Beautiful and evocative. A refined eroticism runs through the film. Provost translates the era with ambience and atmosphere, reconnecting with a fascinating Belle Époque." Jacky Bornet Franceinfo Cultute

"A touching and visually fetching look at the intertwining of art and stubborn romance. This tale of strong brush strokes and strong emotions — and how places evoke feelings and memories — effortlessly recalls a time when “wellness” classes weren’t needed to connect with nature because nature mattered as much as man-made beauty."
