Salvatore Todaro saved the lives of Belgian survivors of a ship he torpedoed against the rules of his superiors and the wishes of many of his men. Pierfrancesco Favino is excellent again as Todaro in this "incredible" drama which focuses on humanity rather than war. True story.

Pierfrancesco Favino delivers another powerhouse performance in drama-thriller COMANDANTE, which opened the 2023 Venice Film Festival and which re-creates the true story of Royal Italian Submarine Commander Salvatore Todaro who saved the lives of Belgian sailors after he torpedoed their cargo ship.
It begins off-shore with an insight into Todaro's private life; the corset he has to wear, his wife and expectant child. Other sailers also farewell their loves before the next command. Immediately, the tone and colour of the film is noticeable; it's not going to be a 'heroic' depiction of duty. The music score by English musician Robert Del Naja is also noticeable. He is the lead musician in the band Massive Attack which is known for their downbeat soundscapes and the musical undercurrents here are foreboding.
