In this, the third film of director Paweł Pawlikowski’s post-WWII reflections, exiled author Thomas Mann, a Nobel prize winner, returns to Germany in 1949 with his daughter Erika (played by Sandra Huller) to honour Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s 200th anniversary in the latter’s birthplace of Frankfurt, West Germany.
Next, he plans to visit the city where the literary giant died: Weimar, now in the communist East and receive the Goethe Prize.
Mann left Germany in 1933 when Hitler came to power and his return is bittersweet as a divided Germany echoes the fractures within his own family.
