Margot and Alma are two best friends holding on to the energy of their youth and their burning desire to conquer the theatre world. They support each other, even as they vie for the same part in a theatre production that will give them their start. One is holding a deep secret and both girls go through a roller-coaster of emotions: guilt, grief, anger and a sense of injustice.
In her debut feature, director Anaïs Volpé explores the power of friendship and youth and the unexpected challenges life can present. A film full of energy and life, The Braves was selected to be part of the Directors’ Fortnight (la Quinzaine des Réalisateurs) at the Cannes Film Festival 2021 and also features Angélique Kidjo as Alma’s mother, Amina.
Funny and dramatic with narrative twists aplenty, this is a great film. If you loved RISE (En Corps) don't miss this.
"With The Braves, writer-director Anas Volp has created a beautiful portrait of female friendship that is as jubilant as it is absolutely devastating" Review
"It's an indictment to cinema that it seems so strange to watch 27-year-old women have fun and still be in pursuit of their dreams... [Anaïs] Volpé will be a new voice in cinema." Cineuropa
