A Chilean-Spanish-French big budget coproduction The Movie Teller  contains scenes from some of the greatest films of all time. Paths To Glory, Spartacus, From Here To Eternity and many more. The folks in the cinema in the small mining town of La Pampa in the desert in Chile in which they are screeend watch in wonder as its an escape from the day to day where as the narrator tells us "every day is the same." 

Merdado ( Antonio de la Torre) works for the mining company that ostensibly runs the town and he takes his family to the films once a week. It's their church  and when he is injured, his daughter becomes the chief re-teller of what was screened that week not just for him but for many in the town who enjoy her descriptiveness, her style of delivery and her sense of wonder.  She is the movie teller. 

She, Maria Magarita  (the role is taken a two parts one when she is a child and one when she is teen-younger woman) sees much more than just the films. She  

witnesses the inequities of working life which bring her and the family into the orbit of mine manager Nansen, (played by Daniel Bruhl who is excellent as always) she sees her mother leave the family and her father, her brothers all grow up and how the ideal of love can be so hard to find. 

Nansen is seemingly kind hearted and understanding of the family's position, and later holding a torch for Maria but as a Spaniard over seer alwasy destined to return home is there a hope what they have could work? 

Is Maria destined to be like her mother who she finds later in the film working in a seedy cabaret, seemingly leading an unhappy life?  Or has her life as a story teller given her the strengh to overcome anything and everything. 

An adaptation of the award-winning autobiographical novel by Hernán Rivera Letelier, Scherfig’s beguiling film celebrates imagination and the need  for love, community, and hope. It's a film with an epic scope.
